How to configure your workstation forMaxon Redshift


Redshift is a powerful GPU-based 3D renderer that has been developed mainly for the requirements of high-end production rendering. Due to the significantly shortened render times, you are able to use special effects in your animations. Plugins for the following CAD applications are available: Autodesk Maya, Autodesk 3DS Max, Cinema 4D, Houdini and Katana.

 

The right CPU for Redshift 3.5.14

Redshift is a GPU renderer and requires a processor with maximum core clock to speed up certain parts of the rendering such as scene preparation. A faster processor can load individual scene data faster, but does not have a large impact on the speed of their renderings.  Some processes that occur before and during rendering, such as extracting mesh files, loading textures, and preparing scene data, depend significantly on the performance of the CPU, memory, and your network. These processes can take a long time for very complex scenes and cause significant delays in overall rendering performance. When selecting a processor for your applications, usually the two most important factors are the MHz frequency and the number of cores the processor provides. In the case of Redshift, there is another aspect. The number of PCIe lanes your processor can support. PCIe lanes have a direct impact on the number of graphics cards you can put into your business workstation. The more graphics cards you have, the better render times you will get in Redshift. If you also use the workstation for modeling or animation, we recommend a business workstation with Intel Xeon 10-core CPU with a high clock speed of 4.50Ghz. We can also recommend an Intel i9 10900X with 10 cores and max. 4.50 GHz as well as an AMD Ryzen Pro 3955WX with 16 cores and max. 4.30 GHz.    

 

The optimum memory for Redshift 3.5.14

Since Redshift mainly uses the memory (VRAM) of the GPU for the renderings, one could neglect the actual RAM. A fallacy - we recommend using at least 32 GB for your rendering workstation. If you are running different CAD applications in parallel, such as Autodesk Maya, Autodesk 3DS Max, After Effects or Cinema 4D, we recommend 64 GB RAM or more.   

 

The right crafficcard for Redshift 3.5.14

Redshift is a GPU-based ray tracing engine and requires powerful graphics cards. The more powerful each graphics card is, the faster its renderings will be. NVIDIA Quadro cards give you up to twice as much VRAM as NVIDIA Geforce graphics cards. The VRAM is responsible for the resolution and detail of your scene images. NVIDIA Quadro graphics cards are designed for long-term operation under heavy load. NVIDIA Geforce graphics cards have a good raw performance with sufficient video memory and are usually offered at a much lower price. Multiple graphics cards scale very well in Redshift and render performance is greatly improved. In Redshift, you are able to combine Quadro and Geforce graphics cards. Some users require a certified primary NVIDIA Quadro graphics card due to the hardware requirements of other CAD applications, but would like to improve rendering speed by adding a second less expensive NVIDIA Geforce graphics card. Please note that due to the different graphics card architecture and versions, errors may occur under certain circumstances. We recommend one or two NVIDIA Geforce RTX series 3060Ti, 3070Ti, 3080Ti and 3090Ti or the brandnew Serie RTX4xxx. Alternatively, one or two NVIDIA Quadro RTX A2000 with either 6 or 12 GB GDDR6 VRAM, RTX A4000 with 16 GB VRAM, RTX A4500 with 20 GB VRAM RTX A5000 with 24 GB VRM and RTX A6000 with 48 GB GDDR 6 VRAM are available.  

 

Hard Drive Comparison HDD ./. SSD

The main difference between hard disks and SSDs is the technology responsible for starting and loading programs and data. HDDs have a proven technology and are many times cheaper than an SSD with the same storage space. The retrieval of the data takes considerably more time due to the mechanics and HDDS consume more energy than comparable SSDs. Solid state drives are characterized by faster start and load times, consume significantly less energy, have a longer service life and do not generate much heat. We recommend an M.2 NVME SSD for the system and programs and a second ;M.2 NVMe SSD for the project data.
