How to configure your workstation for Autodesk Inventor 2024

Autodesk Inventor is a professional CAD program for mechanical 3D design and product simulation. Inventor was developed for designers and engineers and convinces with its user-friendly usability.

The right CPU for Inventor 2024

When selecting the CPU, there are two characteristics that describe the performance of the CPU. The frequency (MHz) is responsible for how many computing operations a single core can execute per second. The number of cores is responsible how many computing operations can be executed simultaneously. Priority in your decision: Does my program support the use of multiple CPU cores? Autocad Inventor is a single-thread application for many functions. In order to achieve a good performance, a high clock rate of the processor and not the number of cores is decisive. Rely on a professional Intel Xeon processor with 8- or 10-core with a Turbo Boost of 4.50GHz. Intel Xeon W-series processors give you up to 18 cores and 36 threads. Specialized for parallel workloads, up to 55MB of load-level cache ensures excellent results with Inventor. Alternatively, you can choose an Intel i9 with a high clock speed, such as the Intel i9 10900x with 10 cores and up to 4.50 GHz in Turbo Boost.

When is a multi-core processor usefull fo Inventor 2024?

Multi-core processors are supported by Inventor in special areas such as 3D applications and renderings. If you integrate these tasks into your workflow, we recommend two high-frequency 16- or 18-Core processor. Pay attention to a high MHz performance of the Intel Turbo Boost. The Intel Turbo Boost technology can automatically increase the CPU's speed to the maximum clock frequency when required to be able to call up the optimal performance during intensive workloads like simulations and renderings. Intel Xeon processors of the Platinum series offer you up to 28 cores and 56 threads per CPU core.

Optimized memory for Inventor 2024

The more complex your assemblies are, the more memory your workstation will need. As a basis 16GB are sufficient for smaller assemblies. For larger assemblies with more than 1,000 components, we recommend using 32 GB DDR RAM. DDR stands for Double Data Rate. The higher the number at the end, the more modern is your memory. For more than 5,000 components, we recommend 64-128 GB RAM. The RAM requirements vary depending on the complexity of your assemblies and their component geometry. We recommend using memory with the ECC (Error Correction Code) suffix. The more RAM is used in a business workstation and is loaded by Autocad Inventor, the higher the risk of memory errors. ECC RAM detects and corrects 1-bit memory errors on the fly. The use of ECC memory modules improves the reliability and maintainability of your system. The error correction takes place via redundancy, memory space and transmission capacities are used more.

Definition of large assemblies in Inventor 2024

The size of the individual assemblies has a decisive influence on the performance of your hardware. The assembly size depends on the number of copies of a component, the complexity of the geometry and the level of detail in your drawings. Complex Inventor assemblies consist of 100,000 copies and 10,000 different components. We define a large assembly from 5,000 copies with 2,000 components. Pay very careful attention to processor speed and number of CPU cores. Large assemblies require sufficient memory. Make sure that the hard disk speed is suitable and that the graphics card has enough VRAM and CUDA cores.

Optimized graphics cards for Inventor 2024

Autodesk Inventor certifies and recommends only nVidia Quadro series graphics cards. We recommend the use of an nVidia Quadro card in your professional environment. Quadro cards ensure full Autodesk support in case of software problems. Certified Inventor nVidia graphics cards have special Open-GL drivers and ensure error-free and fast interaction with Autodesk Inventor. For optimal visualization results, we recommend a DirectX11 capable NVIDIA Quadro P series graphics card with at least 5GB of graphics memory. The faster the graphics card, the better the performance you'll get when working with 3D models and their 3D assemblies. In order to be able to show the rotation of the view or the moving of elements smoothly, we recommend for smaller assemblies a NVIDIA Quadro P4000 with 8 GB GDDR5 V-RAM. For medium-sized assemblies, we advise an NVIDIA Quadro A2000 with 6 GB or 12 GB GDDR6 V-RAM. If you work with larger assemblies of 5,000 components or more, an RTX A4000 with 16 GB GDDR6 or a a Quadro RTX A4500 with 20 GB or a Quadro RTX A5000 with 24 GB GDDR6 V-RAM is the better choice. As a favorable alternative, we can recommend the following certified AMD graphics cards: AMD Radeon Pro W6600 with 8 GB for simple tasks or for more demanding 3D models an AMD Radeon Pro W6800 with 32 GB VRAM. Using the latest graphics card driver increases performance and new features can be unlocked. Updating the graphics card driver can be automated via the device information settings. Performance increases are possible, stability remains guaranteed and new functions can be unlocked.

Optimized disk configuration for Inventor 2024

Benefit from significantly faster loading times of an SSD hard disk. Solid-state hard drives dramatically reduce access times to their assemblies. The time you need to load and save a more complex assembly with Inventor is extremely accelerated by using an M.2 NVMe SSD. We recommend the configuration of two M.2 NVMe SSDs. The first M.2 SSD for the operating system and Autodesk Inventor 2024 as well as other programs, on the second M.2 SSD you store your project data. If you have a lot of complex project data that you need to keep for many years, we recommend that you set up a RAID (Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks) array as RAID 1 (Mirror) for your data.
