How to configure your workstation for Autodesk 3ds Max 2024
The 3D computer graphics program Autodesk 3ds Max was specially developed for modelling and visualisation. Graphic designers, game developers, CAD artists and architects use Autodesk 3ds Max for 3D modeling, animation and rendering. Here is our hardware recommendation:
The right processor für 3ds max 2024
The choice of the right CPU will primarily depend on your projects. 3D modeling, simulations or renderings have different requirements on the CPU. Single threaded applications like Autodesk 3ds Max develop their full potential with the highest possible clock speed of the processor. For simple modeling and animation, we recommend a high-frequency Intel Xeon 8-core or 10-core W-series processor with a high clock speed. For rendering, Autodesk 3ds Max uses a CPU-based rendering engine. A high number of CPU cores is required to handle the rendering processes quickly and smoothly. For complex projects and demanding 3D renderings we can recommend the following processors depending on your budget: Intel Core i7 9700 with 8 cores, 16 threads and 4.70 GHz Intel Core i9 10900x with 10 cores, 20 threads and max. 4.5GHz, optionally a special renderingg workstation wdual Xeon processors of the Intel Xeon Bronze, Silver, Gold or Platinum series. We explain the differences between Intel Xeon and Intel Core processors in detail in our MediaWiki. AMD has become a strong competitor because AMD processors offer a large number of cores. Intel CPUs are not able to deliver the same number of cores, but offer a higher clock rate. This competition currently (as of May 2022) leads to processors with 10 cores and 20 threads up to 64 cores with 128 threads. When it comes to processors for rendering, no Intel CPU even comes close to the performance of an AMD Ryzen ThreadRipper. We recommend the AMD Ryzen Threadripper Pro 3955WX with 16 cores and 32 threads as an excellent price-performance ratio. For simulations, a high clock rate tips the scales. We recommend an Intel Core i9-10900X with 10 cores and 20 threads.
How much memory for 3ds max 2024?
For most Autodesk 3ds Max users, 32 GB of memory is quite sufficient. Make sure your workstation gives you enough RAM banks. We recommend a business workstation with 8 memory banks to avoid complicated and costly RAM upgrades at a later date. Memory with ECC (Error Correction Code) support offers higher reliability. Errors in the RAM can corrupt data, resulting in erroneous data and calculations as well as system crashes. For CAD artists who work with complex models and renderings on a daily basis, we recommend using one of our RAM-optimised workstations with 64 GB or more. ou can view the utilization of the main memory during a 3DS Max project in the task manager under the tab *Performance* in percent. To get the best performance, we recommend running the RAM in quad-channel mode.
The optimal graphics card for 3ds max 2024
When creating, editing and animating 3D models, the graphics card plays a crucial role. The higher the frame rate (FPS), the smoother your model can be displayed when rotating and zooming. The FPS (Frames per Second) value indicates how many frames per second appear on your display. To display scenes in motion optimally in Autodesk 3ds Max, you need a performance-optimized graphics card. If you use 2-4 GB drawings, the blockwise input/output operations between the hard disk and the graphics card memory can cause image jerks as soon as the graphics card memory is fully utilized. We recommend an NVIDIA RTX A2000 with either 6 or 12GB of GDDR6 VRAM as a starter, an NVIDIA Quadro RTX A4000 with 16GB of VRAM for high-performance workflows, or alternatively an NVIDIA Geforce RTX 3060 with 12GB. For the high end workstation, we recommend an NVIDIA Quadro RTX A5000, NVIDIA Geforce 3080Ti or an NVIDIA Geforce 3090Ti. AMD supports 3ds max with the AMD Radeon ProRenderer. AMD has very good alternatives ready with the Radeon Pro W6600 and Radeon W6800. Pay attention to the driver support and the AutoDesk 3ds Max certifications. The Quadro variants are certified by Autodesk, the Geforce series has only received the status *tested*. For this reason, we prefer to use mostly NVIDIA Quadro RTX series graphics cards for our business workstation for Autodesk 3ds Max. If you are using a third-party rendering engine, it might be worthwhile to use two graphics cards.
